Plant Plot Update August 4 2024

I needed to grab all the eggplants that were viable ... or at least, far enough along to be viable for sauce.

I figured, while I was out there, I'd check on the melons. We've gotten a lot of rain -- A LOT OF RAIN -- and I didn't want them to burst.

Note: I have seen watermelons split ... tho, not at this size. They're generally smaller. But I would be broken hearted to have a melon this size split and then be lost to the critters and creepy-crawlies.

We're growing a different variety than we had last year, and I still surprised at how quickly they've developed. They are so sweet and just a gosh darn pleasure to eat. In my review of the watermelon bed, we had a monster-chonk ready to harvest.

There was also a sugar baby ready to go. The sugar baby plant was a gift from a friend of mine who practices winter sowing. I didn't know if her gift was going to make it (and I didn't know what type of melon a sugar baby was when it was transplanted into the garden bed), but it's been spreading out and growing this dark melon for a bit now.

It is just the most beautiful thing ... and that yellow spot is what convinced me it was ready to pull inside. They say a bright yellow spot is a sign of sweetness. I'll let you know when I cut into it.
